Your familiar will never attack on its own turn, there is no rule that allows it to do so. Were you to gain the extra attack feature through multiclassing you would retain all but one of your attacks. As a level 5 warlock you only have one attack, so you're giving that up so the familiar can attack instead. Pact of the Chain allows you to forgo one of your own attacks (you take the attack action on your turn but give one attack to the familiar which uses its reaction since it is not on its turn). They act on their own initiative and can take all the other actions in combat (PHB Pg 192-193). With that in mind, let's have a look at what the rules say.įamiliars by default cannot attack. As long as the excess damage doesn't reduce the creature's normal form to 0 hit points, it isn't knocked unconscious.?Īs always, rules interpretations are up to your DM. If it reverts as a result of dropping to 0 hit points, any excess damage carries over to its normal form.

When it reverts to its normal form, the creature returns to the number of hit points it had before it transformed. Any equipment the imp wears or carries is invisible with it." The Imp's Invisibility counts as an Action right? That would mean it could turn invisible as its action, I use my action to cause it to attack as a reaction, and then it could also use its movement the same turn? Assuming things can't see it while invisible, it could attack with advantage right?įor the imp's Shapechanger ability, it doesn't get any of the abilities of the new form except for movement changes and it instead retains all the stats and abilities (HP, AC, Sting, Immunities etc) of the base imp? So for a spider it doesn't get Web Sense but it might get Web Walker? For Rat it wouldn't get Keen Smell? For Raven it wouldn't get Mimicry? But each of the attacks of its polymorphed forms it would use the Imp's Sting attack?Īlso for Shapechanger: unlike the Polymorph spell, it doesn't get "extra hit points" of the new form like it does in this description of the Polymorph spell The target assumes the hit points of its new form. The imp magically turns invisible until it attacks or until its concentration ends (as if concentrating on a spell). Does it get my melee spell attack bonus or just it's attack bonus with the barbed tail (am guessing also the former)? Assuming the answer to the question 1 is I must use my action to make it attack, then I would cast Vampiric Touch one turn as my action, it couldn't attack because I had already used my action, but on subsequent turns where I used my action to cause it to attack it would be using Vampiric Touch? If I cast Vampiric Touch, as long as the Imp is within 100 feet of me and as long as Vampiric Touch is active (1 minute) I can cause it to attack with it and the healing goes to me? Or does the healing go to the Imp? Seems like the former. It's my understanding that the Imp won't attack on it's own and act fully as another character, like say a Ranger's pet might? In order to get it to attack I must use my own action to make it do so (Pact of the Chain)? I can't command it to attack and let it keep attacking and telepathically command it to move while doing my own actions each turn? Pact of the Chain seems to make it seem like it handles its move and I can use my action to make it attack as its reaction, but that it doesn't do it's own attack and can only do actions that are non-attack actions. I have an Imp Familiar and the Voice of the Chain Master eldritch invocation And I have lots of questions for you smart people. I have a level 5 Warlock, Pact of the Chain, Great Old One Patron.
